Overview
Project SkySphere is Exela's foray into balloon missions. This project's ultimate goal is to launch a balloon to 100,000ft in altitude.
Mission II will be launching from New Hampshire in the second half of 2025. The payload only consists of a Spot Gen 3 GPS tracker and a Runcam 5 onboard camera to film quality HD video for most of the flight. The balloon will be 6ft wide and will travel to an apogee of 15km, which is above the cruising altitude of commercial airliners.
Mission III will launch from Vermont to avoid the chance of the payload landing in the ocean. The balloon will be 800g in weight and will reach an apogee of 30km. The payload will consist of a GoPro Hero 3 Silver camera and will provide 4 hours of 1080p HD video, an altimeter, two GPS trackers, and a 1 meter parachute. Expected to launch in the summer of 2026.
